Abstract

Found to be one of the most influential story telling medium of entertainment media and subsequently a most powerful educational tool, video games teach players how to interact with different cultures and races. Like many mass media productions, the game industry has been relying on the use of stereotypes to create character designs for better player experiences . However, video games carry on the same Hollywood tradition of negatively stereotyping men and women of different cultures and Ethnicities. It is the game and character designers’ responsibility to formulate positive ethnically diverse stereotypes for better player experiences. This thesis illustrates a formal approach of visual analysis and process, based on case studies, in the aim to generate a positive format for depicting ethnic stereotypes for character design in game art.
