In the following designs of Morgana's character I am demonstrating the negative stereotypes of Arab women following the models of Jacque Shaheen that i had presentend before in my thesis research page.
Why is this negative?
Why is this negative?
Eastern Perspective:
•Although
belly dancing is the natural form of dancing practiced by women and sometimes men of
the East! This visual suggests that all women from the “orient” are dancers.
•why
is that bad?; Because the Middle Eastern culture mostly perceives the dancer
profession as immodest, vain and in addition to promiscuity promotion it
objectifies women.
•And a
woman displaying her assets in public must be a slave girl as stated by "sharia
law" of Islam--which forged most of the Middle Eastern culture-- until all
slaves where supposedly to be freed according to Islamic rules and values.
•This
visual subsequently suggests that all women from the Middle East are ok with
being objectified, subservient slave girls.
Western Perspective:
•This visual suggests objectifying women; in displaying oversized bosom and unrealistic hour glass figure.
•It also reflects some male fantasy of a subservient woman.
•The example of “I dream of Jeannie” television
show came out in the late 60’s as women in the west
have just made a breakthrough in obtaining their
rights. This work echoed some people’s nostalgia of
what they think once was.*

Why is this negative?
Eastern Perspective:
•Although covering up for women in the
Arab world has its long history and many interpretations as to why they do it. This type of dress is excessive and Black
is considered by most nations of the Arab
world to be a bleak and morbid color.
•why is that bad?; Because the Middle
Eastern culture mostly equates black with death.
And prostitutes of the Arabic peninsula before the emergence of Islam used to
cover their faces.
•However adult and aged women in rural
areas choose to wear the color since it hides the form. In case of Saudi Arabia
until very recently it was the law to wear such a garment and to
cover the face, and even
cover the eyes too with a thin layer od fabric.
•why is that bad?; because this manner of dressing is not
obligatory according to the Islamic religion yet some Muslim nations with a certain highly patriarchal
societies demanded and obligated women to do so against their will or with
applying certain social and peer pressures.
•Which is badly perceived by intellectual
Arab women who according to earlier and recent statistics represent the
majority of the Universities student body throughout the Arab world.
Western Perspective:
•Black is considered by most nations of the west also to be a bleak and morbid color of morning and death.
•This visual suggests objectifying women;
in the sense that she is considered a piece of meat that needs to be covered.
•It is widely recognized as representing
of a terrorist individual or society.
•This is due to the media that focuses on
such groups of women whenever covering news regarding attempted of successful
terrorist attacks.
